Incredible Cocktail
The original recipe for Chartreuse, using 130 herbs and spices, was probably produced by an alchemist experimenting with alcoholic infusions as early as the sixteenth century. In 1605 the 'Elixir of Long Life' was passed to Carthusian monks - Les Peres Chartreux - and later on, to the Monastery of La Grande Chartreuse in the French Alps. By around 1740 the production technique was perfected and Green Chartreuse appeared. The less alcoholic yellow version appeared in 1838. In 1876 the Procurator of the monastery obtained an order preventing any other distiller from using the word Chartreuse on their label. Today there is only one Chartreuse. The production facility is now at Voiron; only three monks know the precise formula.
