Mint Julep

Traditionally served on Kentucky Derby day, the first Saturday in May.

Ingredients

  • 3 measures of bourbon (preferably Kentucky)
  • 1 measure of sugar syrup
  • 4 fresh sprigs of mint

Instructions

Add the syrup and mint to glass. Gently crush the mint with the flat end of a barspoon; how much juice you extract depends upon your liking for mint. In some states the tradition is not to crush it at all. Add the bourbon and stir gently whilst filling the glass with crushed ice. Arrange the sprigs with the stalks down and some leaves on top. Serve with straws and a napkin. If brandy is used in place of the bourbon, this is a Brandy Julep. If Southern Comfort is used in place of the bourbon and the sugar syrup halved, this is a Southern Comfort Julep.
