Black Orchid
In 1790 Frenchman Dr. Pierre Ordinaire fled the French Revolution and settled in Switzerland. By 1792 he perfected the recipe for an alcoholic elixir flavoured with 15 herbs and other plants. Before his death, he gave the recipe to his housekeeper Madame Henriot, who dispensed it as an aid to digestion. One of her customers, Major Henry Dubied, purchased the recipe in 1797 and began manufacturing it in quantity with his son-in-law and partner, Henri-Louis Pernod. The Pernod brand became so popular that at one time it was part of the French Army's daily rations.
