Black Velvet
Also known as Bismarck or Champagne Velvet. Created in 1861 at Brooks's Club, London. Prince Albert had died and a steward decided the champagne should also be in mourning, so he mixed it with Guinness. This became very popular and was the favourite tipple of Prince Otto Von Bismarck of Germany (1815-98). Half fill glass with draught or bottled Guinness and gently top up with champagne. If lager-beer is used in place of Guinness, this is a Halsted Street Velvet.
