Manhattan

Originally this was made with one part whisky to two parts Vermouth. Usually two or three dashes of sugar syrup, Curacao and bitters were included and the result served straight up. In Manhattan today they are invariably served with ice, and like the Martini, their Vermouth content has greatly reduced over the years.

Ingredients

  • 2 measures of Canadian Whisky
  • 1 measure of Rosso Vermouth
  • 4 drops of Angostura

Instructions

Shake briefly with a glassful of broken ice and pour unstrained. Add cherry on a stick. If no Vermouth is used, this is a Naked Manhattan. If only 1/2 measure of Rosso Vermouth is used and 1/2 measure of Dry Vermouth added, this is a Perfect Manhattan.

Garnish: cherry or twist of lemon.

Alcohol Content: 2.5 units

Glass Type: Tumbler, Old-Fashioned or Rocks Glass
