Muddle

To mash or grind fruit or herbs at the bottom of a glass to release their flavour. For example, mint and sugar is muddled in the bottom of the glass before ice and other ingredients are added to make a Julep. There is a special wooden tool available for muddling, known as a muddler; this crushes the ingredients without scarring the glass.
